Popular Cocktails to Make at Home

What fun is a party without cocktails? In order to bring your party to the next level, you will need to learn how to mix and serve your own drinks. To enhance the atmosphere, look to all the details such as proper glassware, bar rail liquors, garnishes, any necessary mixes, and a fun cocktail shaker. Most drinks are served on the rocks or call for ice, so having a bag or two handy is recommended.

Here are some easy yet classy cocktails to make at home:

1. Moscow Mule

A fairly simple drink to make, it requires nine parts vodka, 24 parts ginger beer, one part lime juice, ice and a lime wedge for garnish. Characteristically the Moscow Mule is served in a copper mug, so if you plan to make this a regular part of your repertoire, investing in a set of copper mugs is a wise choice. They can also be served in a Highball glass.

2. Whiskey Sour

Whiskey Sours are served in old fashioned glasses or Cobbler. The recipe calls for three parts bourbon whiskey, two parts lemon juice, one part Gomme syrup, a dash of egg white. Shake it with ice, and serve it on the rocks (over ice), and garnish it with lemon or orange slices, a maraschino cherry or a sugared glass.

3. Cosmopolitan

A Cosmopolitan, or Cosmo, is a pink drink served straight up, without ice, in a martini glass. It is made of vodka, triple sec, cranberry juice and garnished with a lime wedge. To make, add all ingredients and ice into a cocktail shaker, mix well, strain into a martini glass and serve with the lime wedge garnish.

4. Gin and Tonic

This is a particularly simple, yet very refreshing drink to make. Practice makes perfect to determine your preferred mix, but start with one to three parts gin, and three parts tonic water. Gin and tonic is served on the rocks, so the easiest way to prepare it is to add ice to a glass, pour the gin over the ice, then fill with tonic to desired level. A lime wedge is the traditional garnish, and they are typically served in a Highball glass or a Rocks glass.

5. Bloody Mary

Bloody Mary’s can take a bit longer to master due to the amount of ingredients and rations. To make this drink you will need one part lemon juice, three parts vodka, six parts tomato juice, salt, a few dashes of Worcestershire sauce, pepper, and Tabasco sauce. In a Highball glass, add a few dashes of Worcestershire sauce, Tabasco, salt and pepper. Pour the rest of the ingredients in, and stir well. As a garnish, use a celery stalk or a dill pickle spear. This drink is served on the rocks.

6. Mojito

Traditionally a Cuban drink, a mojito is served in a Collins glass. The recipe calls for six mint leaves, white rum, sugar, lime juice and soda water. In a Highball glass, add leaves, sugar and lime juice. Add rum and soda water, and garnish with mint leaves or Yerba Buena. Mojitos are served on the rocks and generally with a straw.

As with any recipe, there are many variations that exist for each type of drink. Practice makes perfect to determine how you and your guests prefer your drinks prepared.
