Lifestyle Changes to Prevent Dry Eyes

Although you can buy lubricating eye drops over the counter, there are also lifestyle changes you can make to alleviate symptoms.

1. Limit screen time

When you look at a computer screen or your phone for long periods, it requires visual concentration. Too much screen time can cause a condition called digital eye strain and lead to dry eyes. Taking a break from the screen every 15 minutes or so can make a difference. Close your eyes for a while and then blink several times to re-wet your eyes. You can try to focus on blinking during screen time to help with the condition.

2. Use a humidifier 

Furnaces and air conditioning cause dry air in the home, which in turn causes dry eyes. A humidifier puts moisture back into the air and helps alleviate symptoms.

3. Wear protective eyewear

While outside, your eyes are exposed to all kinds of things that can dry out your eyes. Wraparound sunglasses offer a barrier to wind, bright light, allergens and dust in the air. They can be worn over your glasses or without glasses.

4. Stop smoking

Besides other health conditions, smoking can also harm your eyes. Tobacco and nicotine are eye irritants that break down the lubricant in tears. Smoking can cause redness and itchy eyes. Second-hand smoke can also cause dry eyes.

5. Position of your computer screen below eye level

When you look down at your computer, your eyes don’t open as wide. That can keep tears from evaporating as quickly. It may also be a reminder to blink more often.

6. Avoid blowing air

Things such as cooling fans, air-conditioning, blow dryers and heating fans in your car will all cause dry eyes. Aim the blowing air in a different direction to avoid drying tears too quickly.

7. Medications

Several medications can cause dry eyes. Talk to your doctor about possible alternatives that are less likely to cause the condition. A few common types of medications are anti-depressants, hypertensives, antihistamines and pain relievers.

8. Stay hydrated

There are lots of good reasons to drink enough water every day. It can also help with dry eyes. When your body is dehydrated, all of your mucous membranes dry out, causing itchy eyes. Eight glasses a day is recommended for most people.

9. Omega-3 fatty acids

This supplement can help with several different conditions, including dry eyes. Although it’s a relatively new treatment, many people feel it increases lubricating tears when used regularly.

10. Warm compresses

Placing lukewarm water compresses on your eyes can also bring relief. Leave them on for 10 to 15 minutes.

As with all medical conditions, see a doctor if your dry eyes persist. Symptoms of dry eyes are unpleasant, and often treatable. Take good care of your eyes and they’ll take care of you!
